Who is Aaron Beck, the inventor of the Beck Depression Test?
Aaron Beck was born in 1921 in Providence, Rhode Island. He attended Brown University, where he studied medicine. After graduation, Beck began working as a psychiatrist.
He quickly became interested in the study of depression and developed a test to measure its severity. The test was published in 1961 and became widely used throughout the world.
Beck is also the author of several books on depression, including Depression: Causes and Treatment (1973) and Cognitive Therapy and Emotional Disorders (1976).
In 2009, he received the prestigious Lasker-DeBakey Award in Clinical Medical Research for his work on depression. Aaron Beck passed away in 2014 at the age of 93.
How does the Beck Depression Test work?
The Beck Depression Test is a questionnaire that helps determine the severity of depression. It consists of 21 questions and takes about 5 minutes to complete. The questionnaire asks about various symptoms of depression, such as hopelessness, irritability, and fatigue.
A score is then given based on the answers, which can help determine the severity of depression.
The score on the scale is based on the number of symptoms reported by the person.

- 14-19 - mild depression
- 20-28 - moderate depression
- 29-63 - severe depression
